Stephen founded McCotter Law in 2010 opening the firm’s first office in his hometown of St. Marys, Ontario. Stephen completed his Bachelor of Arts in Finance and Economics at the University of Western Ontario in 1994. After fifteen years owning and operating an inn, hotel and restaurants in St. Marys and Stratford, Stephen returned to UWO and earned his J.D. from the Faculty of Law in 2009. Stephen completed his articles at Miller Thomson LLP in 2010. He then returned to St. Marys to launch McCotter Law. Stephen partnered with his brother in 2012 and the firm now has offices in St. Marys, Stratford and Toronto.
Stephen maintains a general practice supporting business clients and individuals. His experience supporting business clients has focused on corporate / commercial services for small- and medium-sized companies, real estate transactions, commercial leases, taxation and litigation. His work with individual clients includes wills & estates, trusts, real estate, taxation and litigation. With respect to litigation, Stephen’s experience has focused on disputes in the Ontario Courts and the Tax Court of Canada.
Stephen has helped clients incorporate, draft bylaws and resolutions, maintain corporate minute books, implement share structures and shareholder agreements, and comply with provincial and federal laws, including corporation law and tax law. He has helped clients lease, purchase and sell real estate. Stephen has also advised individual clients in respect of estate planning, tax planning, and other matters of taxation including tax disputes with the CRA. His work with clients on the litigation front has spanned a wide range of commercial disputes and personal disputes.
